They Went Everywhere Preaching – Sermon by Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones

A Sermon on Acts 8:4

Philip Proclaims Christ in Samaria

Now those who were scattered went about preaching the word. (ESV)

Christianity began as a small movement in a vast, often hostile Roman Empire. How did it grow? What factors contributed to it eventually becoming the dominant religion of the empire? Moreover, what may we learn from them as our culture reverts back to a hostile pagan one? Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones highlights the vital importance of men like Peter, Paul, and the other apostles as they preached the good news around the empire. Interestingly, he notes the role persecution played in the spread of the Gospel. However, Dr. Lloyd-Jones specifically points to the witness and testimony of ordinary members of the Christian church as being a means God regularly uses to spread the truth about Christ. His text is Acts 8:4, but Dr. Lloyd-Jones comments on how often the Holy Spirit uses ordinary Christians to preach the Word. He emphasizes that the spread of the Gospel comes by the preaching of the Word, not just talking about ourselves. We must consider today how God has used ordinary men and women in ordinary conversation preaching the extraordinary message of Christ to evangelize the world. Listen as Dr. Lloyd-Jones teaches us why “gossiping” the Gospel is of such great importance.

Keeping the Unity of the Spirit – a sermon from Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones

Do you ever struggle to get along with a brother or sister in Christ? Conflict is an ongoing part of life today, just as it was for the church at Ephesus. This challenging message by Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones opens Paul’s letter to the Ephesians and address how Believers can live in unity and peace. Rather than ignore sin or avoid confrontation, we must quickly exhort and forgive one another, guarding the unity of the Spirit, and guarding the fellowship of believers. This is supernatural unity that can only belong to those indwelt with the Spirit. Therefore, to not guard this unity is actually a grievance to the Holy Spirit. So how can we guard our Holy Spirit unity? Lloyd-Jones proclaims that being humble, gentle, patient, and bearing with one another are critical characteristics of believing relationships. We must do this because we love one another and we desire to guard our unity. Just as parents humbly serve and instruct their children with patience and gentleness, we must do the same thing with our brothers and sisters in Christ. This sermon will be a great encouragement to your personal fellowship with the church body.

Discipleship in Community

Revival Sermon by Dr Martyn Lloyd Jones

Prayer for Revival

The church today is too regular, doing what other religions can do. Other religions can teach a man to be moral and just. Other religions can create a sense of community and friendship. Other religions can do good things in the community. Christians tend to be content with these small things; content with the unexceptional and ordinary condition of the Church. We must pray for revival. In this sermon on Exodus 33:12-17, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones looks at the prayer of Moses, as Moses prays for more. God had returned to Israel and Moses is grateful for this, but he wants more. Dr. Lloyd-Jones explains that praying for revival is praying for something extra, something more. Revival is not ordinary. It is a special, unusual, and exceptional move of God. The Christian praying for revival is no longer satisfied with the ordinary condition of the Church. He prays for God’s glory to be shown. He cries for the “depths” that God may be known. True revival cannot be manipulated. The moment we believe this can be organized, we are in great danger. Listen in as Dr. Lloyd-Jones explains that church needs the power of God. The Holy Spirit must fall upon us, and we must be revived.

The Fellowship of Believers

A sermon from Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones https://www.mljtrust.org/sermons/the-fellowship-of-believers/

A Christian is a person who has received abundant life from God and what does the Christian do in response to this incredible measure of grace? He goes to church. Dr. Lloyd-Jones quotes a Welsh politician in the 1960’s who said, “I’m a Christian, but the non-churchgoing type.” Dr. Lloyd-Jones exposes this wrong thinking, showing that a Christian is not one who goes to church once a year or not at all, but one who participates actively in Christ’s body in a response of thankfulness and servitude. Reaching the world does not start with asking people to go to church; it starts with sharing the gospel, as the gospel is the most important truth in the world. As Dr. Lloyd-Jones explains, if an unbeliever is saved by Christ, they will naturally want to join the local, visible family of Christ. Ultimately, Christians gather because they rejoice in the same Savior. As Dr. Lloyd-Jones preaches from Acts 2:41–47, we learn that in this life, there is only one way to get to the favorable side of eternity: through Christ’s blood. Those who respond to His sacrifice and rejoice in Him will be in fellowship with believers today.

FEATURED SERMON

The Apostles Doctrine

A Sermon on Acts 2:40-42

And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.

The Fellowship of the Believers

And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. (ESV)

What is the church and who are Christians? According to Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, to know what the church is and understand its mission, he recommends looking to the church in Acts 2:40–42. There the church is a community of born again, spirit-empowered believers who boldly proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ to a broken and sinful world. The church committed itself to the teaching and preaching of the apostles’ doctrine and the fellowship. The church of Acts was far more than a social gathering, but it was the power of God, manifested on earth through the work of His Spirit. The early church did not grow by attracting people by appealing to humanity’s carnal desire, but though the power of the gospel. It is this gospel that the church is tasked with guarding and proclaiming. It is this glorious gospel that can transform the lives of those around us. If the church today and beyond is to be a faithful servant of Jesus Christ, and if the church is to be a faithful steward of His gospel, it must commit itself to the teaching and works of the apostles as found in God’s word.
